If you're planning to head all the way down to Rio de Janeiro, there is no reason why you shouldn't explore some of South America's greatest gems. From the isolated Easter Island to bustling Santiago, there are side excursions available for everybody. You don't want to regret skipping any of these truly bucket list places.

Easter Island, Chile

About

Part of Chile, Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world. Easter Island is famous for their incredible stone statues that represent the rise and fall of the Polynesian culture. There are plenty of hotels to stay at on Easter Island that range from budget to luxury. The explora Rapa Nui is the best hotel to stay at and helps bring your trip full circle with something for everybody. Hiking, exploring, swimming, and scuba diving are the most popular things to do on Easter Island.

Getting There

From Rio de Janeiro you will take a 1 stop flight connecting in Santiago, Chile on LAN. The flight from Rio de Janeiro (GIG) is about 4 and a half hours to Santiago, Chile (SCL). From Santiago to Easter Island (IPC), it is almost a 6 hour flight.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

About

Part of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are known for their incredible wild life, the isolation from the rest of the world, and the amount of outdoor activities available to tourists. The list could go on forever, but some of the most popular activities are surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and hiking through wild preserves. Some of the really cool wildlife on the islands include giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins, unique bird species, iguanas, and more.

Getting There

From Rio de Janeiro, you will probably need to make 2 stops to get to the Galápagos Islands, likely transiting through Quito, Ecuador before you land on the islands. There are two main airports in the Galápagos Islands; Baltra Island and San Cristóbal.

Mendoza, Argentina

About

Mendoza is world-renowned for their wine country. If traveling between July to September, the temperatures will be around the mid 60s, ranging up to the mid 70s and as low as the mid 50s. Central Mendoza has a very walkable downtown area making it easy for you to explore their rich culture. The main tourist attraction here are the vineyards and winery tours, also known as “bedegas” in Argentina. Other popular things to do in Mendoza include skiing (depending on snowfall during the winter months of June – August), indulging in the Kaua Spa at the 5-star Park Hyatt Mendoza, and experiencing some of the best food in South America.

Getting There

There are unfortunately no nonstop flights from the USA or Rio de Janeiro, however, there are plenty of options in and out. You can connect through Sao Paulo (GRU), Iguazu Falls (IGR), Buenos Aires (EZE and AEP), and Santiago (SCL).

Santiago de Chile

About

As the capital city of Chile, there are endless things to experience within Santiago including museums, world-class restaurants, skiing in the mountains, and even going to the beach on the same day. With snow up on the Andes, it's an incredible place to check off your bucket list if you're an avid skier or snowboarder. Just like Mendoza, Santiago offers world-renowned wineries and restaurants. Out of all of our excursions, this is the easiest to do in terms of price, convenience, and it not being too far outside of your comfort zone.

Getting There

Santiago is a very accessible place from North America and from Rio de Janeiro. TAM Airlines and LAN both have nonstop from Rio de Janeiro (GIG). You can also reach Santiago with nonstop flights from New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas. With a nonstop flight to Easter Island, it would be really convenient to go to Santiago and Easter Island as part of your Summer Games experience.

Machu Picchu, Peru

About

Nothing does a better job of describing Machu Picchu than the jaw-dropping images of the "Lost City of the Incas". Typically, you would stay in Cuzco and take the train up the mountains to Machu Picchu. However, if you are adventurous, there are hiking trails that allow you to hike all or part of the way up. You could also stay a few nights in Lima, which is the main hub near Cuzco.

Getting There

Getting to Cusco (CUZ) can be done through Lima (LIM) through 3-4 different airlines. Lima has nonstop flights to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) as well as multiple cities in the United States including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Lose Angeles, Miami, Dallas, and Houston. There is also seasonal service from Easter Island to Lima if you decide to experience Easter Island.

Iguaçu Falls (Brazil/Argentina)

About

Deemed one of the great natural wonders of the world, this is a place you won't want to miss considering it's at your finger tips while staying in Rio de Janeiro. The falls are located on the border of Argentina and Brazil and there are hotels on both sides of the border. Considering these falls are taller than Niagara Falls and twice as wide, it's truly a spectacle to see. There is a nice Sheraton property on the Argentina side as well as the famous Hotel Das Cataratas.

Getting There

There are nonstop flights to both Iguaçu Falls airports (IGU in Brazil and IGR in Argentina). It's about a 2-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro. There are also connecting flights from other excursion cities such as Mendoza and Lima.
